Traffic is arriving. Nobody’s converting. Before you spend another dollar on ads, fix the page — because every visitor who bounces is money you already paid to lose. Here are the ten most common reasons a landing page doesn’t convert, and the specific fix for each.
1. Your Headline Doesn’t Say What You Do
Visitors decide in about five seconds whether to stay. If your headline is clever instead of clear — “Unlock Your Potential,” “Solutions for Tomorrow” — they leave.
The fix: State exactly what you offer and for whom, in one line. “AI Website Audits That Find What’s Costing You Revenue” beats any slogan. Add a subheadline with the single strongest supporting detail: price, speed, or outcome.
2. Your CTA Is Buried or Vague
The call to action is the entire point of the page, yet it’s routinely hidden below the fold or labeled “Submit.”
The fix:
- Put your primary CTA above the fold — visible the instant the page loads, on both desktop and mobile.
- Use specific action language: “Get My Audit,” “Book My Free Call,” “Start My Trial.” Never “Submit” or “Click Here.”
- Repeat the CTA after every major section. Don’t make visitors scroll back up to convert.
- Make the button impossible to miss: high-contrast color, generous size, whitespace around it.
3. The Page Loads Too Slowly
A landing page that takes more than a few seconds to load loses a huge share of visitors before they see a single word — especially on mobile, where most ad traffic lands.
The fix:
- Compress and resize every image; convert to WebP.
- Remove unnecessary scripts, popups, and tracking pixels from the landing page specifically — it should be the leanest page on your site.
- Test with PageSpeed Insights and fix whatever scores red first.
4. There’s No Social Proof
Nobody wants to be the first to trust you. A page with zero testimonials, reviews, logos, or numbers feels risky — and risk kills conversion.
The fix:
- Add 2–3 testimonials with real names near your CTA. Specific results beat vague praise (“doubled our leads in 60 days” beats “great service”).
- Show client logos, review ratings, or certification badges above the fold if you have them.
- No testimonials yet? Add a guarantee instead — “love it or your money back” removes risk when proof doesn’t exist yet.
5. Your Form Asks for Too Much
Every field is friction. A form asking for name, email, phone, company, budget, timeline, and “how did you hear about us” is an interrogation, not an invitation.
The fix:
- Ask for the minimum to start the conversation: name, email, and at most one qualifying question.
- Move everything else to a follow-up email after they’ve converted.
- Label the button with the outcome (“Get My Free Audit”), not the action (“Submit”).
6. The Message Doesn’t Match the Ad
When someone clicks an ad promising “Website Audit $69” and lands on a generic homepage about your agency, they bounce. This is message mismatch, and it’s one of the most expensive conversion killers in paid traffic.
The fix:
- Every ad gets its own landing page (or at least its own page variant) that repeats the ad’s exact promise in the headline.
- Match the offer, the price, and the language. If the ad says $69, the first thing the visitor sees should be $69.
- Remove navigation menus from landing pages. The only exits should be converting or leaving.
7. You’re Trying to Say Everything at Once
Long pages that cover every feature, every benefit, and every company detail overwhelm visitors. Confused visitors don’t convert — they leave.
The fix:
- One page, one offer, one action. Cut anything that doesn’t directly support the conversion.
- Structure the page as an argument: problem → solution → proof → offer → guarantee → CTA. Each section earns the next.
- If you must include details, put them in expandable sections or below the main conversion flow — never between the visitor and the CTA.
8. There’s No Sense of Urgency (or It’s Fake)
Without a reason to act now, visitors bookmark the page and never return. But fake urgency (“Only 3 left!!!” on a digital product) destroys trust.
The fix:
- Use honest urgency only: real deadlines, genuine limited availability, actual price increases.
- If there’s no natural urgency, manufacture momentum instead: “Join 500+ businesses audited this year” makes acting feel normal, not pressured.
9. Mobile Visitors Get a Broken Experience
Most landing page traffic is mobile, but most landing pages are designed on desktop. Text too small, buttons too close together, forms that require zooming — each flaw costs conversions.
The fix:
- Design mobile-first. Build the page on a phone screen, then expand to desktop — not the reverse.
- Make the CTA thumb-reachable and full-width on mobile.
- Test the entire conversion flow on a real phone, not a browser preview.
10. You Have No Way to Recover Abandoned Visitors
Even great pages convert a minority of visitors. Without a recovery mechanism, the rest are gone forever.
The fix:
- Add an exit-intent offer: a smaller commitment (free checklist, mini-audit, email course) in exchange for an email address.
- Install retargeting pixels so you can bring visitors back with ads that address common objections.
- Follow up fast. Leads contacted within minutes convert dramatically better than leads contacted tomorrow.
